Why Long-Run Steel Is A Practical Asbestos Replacement

Long-run steel works well as a replacement for many asbestos roofs because it is lightweight, efficient to install and suitable for New Zealand building conditions.

Lightweight Roofing

Older asbestos cement roofs were usually installed on structures designed for relatively lightweight roofing. Long-run steel is also a lightweight roof covering, which can make it a better fit than heavier concrete or clay tiles on many older buildings.

The roof structure still needs to be inspected before installation, especially where the old asbestos roof has leaked, cracked or affected timber underneath.

Roof Profile Compatibility

Many asbestos roofs, especially Super Six, have a corrugated look. Long-run corrugate can keep a familiar roofline while replacing the old asbestos material with a modern steel system.

Licensed asbestos work is notified to WorkSafe NZ where required. The programme is planned around notification periods, scaffold, material delivery and weather.

Asbestos Removal

The asbestos roofing is removed using controlled methods, wet preparation, careful sheet handling and licensed asbestos removal procedures. Waste is wrapped, labelled and transported to an approved disposal facility.

Structural Inspection & Purlin Prep

Once the old roofing is removed, the roof structure is inspected. Purlins, battens and other roof framing elements are checked and prepared for the selected long-run steel system.

Any required reinforcement or repairs are discussed before the new roof is installed.

What Is The Difference Between Long-Run Steel And Short-Sheet Steel?

Long-run steel sheets are manufactured in longer lengths to suit the roof layout, which reduces the need for horizontal joins across the roof plane.

Older short-sheet metal roofing uses shorter sections with more laps. Those joins can create extra weak points over time. For many modern New Zealand homes and commercial buildings, long-run steel is the preferred metal roofing format.

Can Long-Run Steel Be Installed On A Low-Pitch Roof?

Some long-run steel profiles have minimum pitch requirements. Standard corrugate is not suitable for every low-pitch roof, so verandas, porches, lean-tos and bay windows may need a different profile or detailing.

What Is The Difference Between Endura, Maxx, Maxam And Altimate?

These are different COLORSTEEL® product grades designed for different exposure conditions.

Endura is commonly used for many standard inland environments. Maxx may be recommended for coastal or higher-exposure locations. Maxam and Altimate may be considered for more demanding environments, depending on site conditions and supplier guidance.

We specify the right grade at quote stage based on the property’s address, exposure and roof design.

Can I Install Long-Run Steel Directly Over My Existing Asbestos Roof?

We do not recommend installing a new roof directly over asbestos roofing.

Overlaying leaves the asbestos in place, which can create issues for future repairs, maintenance, disclosure, insurance or sale. Full asbestos removal provides a cleaner long-term result and allows the roof structure to be inspected before the new long-run steel roof is installed.

Is A Long-Run Steel Roof Noisy In Heavy Rain?

A bare metal roof can be noisy in heavy rain, especially if there is little insulation underneath. Roof blanket insulation can help reduce rain noise and improve thermal comfort.
