Licensed Asbestos Roof Removal

Auckland’s Class A Licensed Asbestos Roof Removal Specialists

Auckland’s dedicated asbestos roof removal team. Backed by Total Roofing’s decades of roofing experience and a WorkSafe NZ Class A asbestos removal licence, we remove asbestos roofing from homes, garages, sheds, light commercial buildings and industrial sites across the Auckland region.

We work with the asbestos roofing materials commonly found on older Auckland properties, including Super Six corrugate, asbestos cement sheets, asbestos roof tiles, asbestos shingles, slate-style roofing and bituminous asbestos underlay beneath Decramastic or Gerard tile roofs.

From testing and WorkSafe NZ notification where required, through to safe removal, disposal and clearance documentation, we manage the job properly from start to finish. No subcontractor handovers. No guesswork. No documentation gaps that could cause problems later when you renovate, insure or sell the property.

We strip asbestos roofing materials from Auckland properties using controlled methods, hand tools and licensed asbestos removal crews. Asbestos Roof Removal: Super Six

Super Six Asbestos Roof Removal

New Zealand’s most common asbestos roofing, and one of the highest weathering risks in Auckland’s climate

Original Super Six roofing should be treated as asbestos-containing unless laboratory testing confirms otherwise. It is commonly found on Auckland garages, sheds, granny flats, lean-tos and older light commercial buildings, especially on properties built or altered between the 1940s and 1980s.

After decades of Auckland UV, wind, rain and coastal exposure, the cement surface can weather and become brittle. Once the material starts breaking down, asbestos fibres are more likely to loosen at the surface, which is why removal needs to be handled carefully.

We remove Super Six sheet by sheet using wet methods and hand tools. Sheets are kept intact where possible, lowered carefully, double-wrapped, labelled and sent to approved asbestos disposal facilities.

Most straightforward Super Six garage roofs can be removed within a day, depending on access, condition and disposal requirements.

Asbestos Roof Removal: Asbestos Cement

Asbestos Cement Roof Removal

Flat panels, profiled sheets and asbestos roof tiles on Auckland’s older housing

Auckland homes and commercial buildings can contain several types of asbestos cement roofing, including flat panels, profiled roof sheets, pressed asbestos cement tiles and older slate-style products. These materials are often found on mid-century homes, additions, garages, workshops and commercial roofing systems.

Where asbestos cement roofing is confirmed, we plan the removal around the condition of the material, roof pitch, access, scaffold requirements and contamination risk. Weathered, cracked or damaged asbestos cement requires extra care, especially if fibres have entered the roof space over time.

Our asbestos cement roof removal process can include controlled work zones, wet methods, sheet-by-sheet removal, HEPA vacuuming where required, waste manifest records and independent clearance documentation.

Roof Removal: Underlay & Sub-Tilles

Asbestos Underlay & Sub-Tile Removal

The hidden asbestos many Auckland homeowners do not know is there

This underlay was commonly used as a sarking or weatherproofing layer. The problem is that it is often only discovered once re-roofing has already started. When that happens, the job may need to stop until a licensed asbestos removal team can assess and remove the material correctly.

We remove asbestos underlay in coordination with the re-roofing schedule. The visible roofing is lifted, the underlay is isolated, removed in controlled sections, wrapped and disposed of correctly, then the roof structure is cleaned and prepared for the next stage.

If you are planning to re-roof a pre-1990 Auckland home, asbestos underlay testing should happen before the job begins. It can prevent delays, extra costs and unsafe handling once the roof is already open.

Why Choose Us

Three commitments
behind every job.

Removing an asbestos roof is not a job for a generalist. The wrong contractor can contaminate the ceiling cavity, leave you without the right documentation, or create problems when the property is renovated, insured or sold.

Our asbestos roof removal service is built around three commitments.

WorkSafe NZ Class ASiteSafeNZDAAAsbestosWise
01

Fully licensed & accredited.

We hold a WorkSafe NZ Class A asbestos removal licence and carry out asbestos roofing work under the controls required for licensed asbestos removal.

Our team follows strict site procedures around testing, work area setup, wet methods, removal, waste handling, disposal and clearance. Licence details can be provided with your quote, and we recommend asking any asbestos contractor for the same before you sign.

02

The full chain, end to end.

You deal with one Auckland team from start to finish. We can help coordinate testing, WorkSafe NZ notification where required, removal, disposal records, air monitoring where applicable, and independent clearance documentation.

That means no handover gaps between separate contractors. No confusion about who is responsible for the roof. No missing paperwork when you need to prove the asbestos was removed properly.

03

Re-Roofing After Roof Removal

Most asbestos roof removal jobs continue straight into roof replacement. Where we complete the replacement roof, our re-roofing workmanship is backed by a 5-year workmanship guarantee.

That gives you one accountable team for the removal and the new roof installation, rather than splitting the job across separate contractors.

08STAGES · WORKSAFE NZ COMPLIANT
01

Inspection & testing

We inspect the roof, identify suspect material and arrange laboratory testing where required. Testing confirms whether asbestos is present before removal or replacement work begins.

02

WorkSafe notification

Licensed asbestos work is notified to WorkSafe NZ where required. We also manage the job timeline around notification periods, site setup and safe removal planning.

03

Site set-up

The work area is prepared with asbestos hazard signage, exclusion zones and protective controls. Site setup depends on the roof type, building layout, access and risk level.

04

Wet method prep

Roofing material is treated with wet methods before disturbance to help reduce the risk of fibres becoming airborne during removal.

05

Sheet-by-sheet removal

No power tools. No breaking. Sheets are unscrewed, lowered by hand and stacked flat where possible. The aim is to remove the roofing intact and keep the work controlled.

06

Double-wrap & label

Asbestos waste is wrapped, sealed and labelled in line with asbestos waste handling requirements before transport.

07

Cavity decontamination

Where required, the roof cavity or affected area is cleaned using suitable asbestos decontamination methods, including HEPA vacuuming where appropriate.

Asbestos waste is transported to an approved disposal facility, with disposal records kept for your property file. Independent clearance documentation is arranged where required for the job.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions About Asbestos Roof Removal

01

How Do I Know If My Auckland Roof Contains Asbestos?

Most Auckland homes built between 1940 and 1990 used asbestos-containing roofing somewhere, corrugated Super Six sheets on garages and sheds (very common in West Auckland and South Auckland), asbestos cement tiles on houses, or bituminous asbestos underlays beneath metal or tile roofs.

02

Is It Legal To Remove Asbestos Roofing Myself In Auckland?

Small amounts of non-friable asbestos can sometimes be removed by an unlicensed person in limited circumstances, but roofing is high risk because it is often old, weathered, brittle and difficult to remove without breakage.

If asbestos roofing is damaged, friable, difficult to access or part of a larger removal job, licensed asbestos removal is the safer and more appropriate option. For full roof removals, you should use a licensed asbestos removal contractor.

03

Can I Stay In The House During Asbestos Roof Removal?

In many cases, occupants can remain in the property while external asbestos roof removal is carried out, provided the work area is properly controlled and the household stays outside the exclusion zone.

Some families choose to be away during working hours because of noise, site activity and access restrictions. We will explain what is practical for your property before work begins.

04

Can You Replace The Roof After Removing Asbestos?

Yes. Many customers choose to remove the asbestos roof and replace it with long-run COLORSTEEL® as one coordinated job.

This can reduce disruption because the scaffold, access planning and roofing team are already in place. It also gives you one point of contact for the removal and replacement stages.

05

What Documentation Do I Receive?

Depending on the job, your documentation may include asbestos test results, WorkSafe NZ notification records where required, disposal records, air monitoring results where applicable, and independent clearance documentation.

Keep these documents with your property records. They may be useful for future insurance, renovation, council, due diligence or property sale questions.

06

How Much Does Asbestos Roof Removal Cost In Auckland?

Small Super Six garage roof removals may start from around $2,500. Residential asbestos cement roof removal often sits around $9,000-$20,000 for removal only, while full removal plus replacement to COLORSTEEL® can sit around $18,000-$45,000 depending on the property.

The final price depends on roof size, pitch, access, material condition, scaffold requirements, disposal needs and whether replacement roofing is included.
